Audit of Post Office @ Rainham Road branch, FAD 098941X

On Monday os” September 2005, I attended Rainham road post office at about 0830 am. The
clerk at the office (Joan Fowkes) allowed me access although the sub-postmistress was not on site. I
started counting cash and stock and I became aware that did not appear to be sufficient cash at the
office. I continued checking and at about 0900 am spmr arrived, whereupon she told me that the
account would be about £50000.00 short.

{ contacted my line manager Alan Stuart to inform him the circumstances, who later attended
‘the office to render assistance. Carol Ballan of the area intervention office at Maidstone and Natasha
Bernard, Investigation manager were also contacted and informed of the circumstances.

The audit resulted in a shortage of £52864.08, comprised

Cash shortage £53016.49
Previous week surplus £ 199.76
Stock Differences £ 4735

The decision was taken to suspend the spmr and defund the office.
