Chris, you know about this - the meeting that Simon set up specifically to help PO, and which which James
thought was his initiative. See below in case Duncan mentions it when you meet. I haven't copied him but
Simon will have briefed him.
And, though I'm sure you'd have had it on your agenda, do update Duncan on SS mainly out of courtesy but also
because SS did say they hadn't always had a great turnaround when they needed help from Fujitsu. You might
want to ask Simon Baker what that was - could strengthen our arm a bit. (I have mentioned below.)
Theresa, ppo and BF for when I return - to catch up with Simon if necessary.

Dear Simon, the meeting was Monday. My week has been rather more hectic than usual as I am
now on holiday, so thank you (genuinely) for asking - the prompt was helpful :) I can see why
you make such a good chairman!
James told me and colleagues including Second Sight, that he had met the Chairman of Fujitsu
on Defence matters. And had taken the opportunity of proactively raising with him the Post
Office/Horizon interim report. He thought it was worth letting the Chairman know what was
happening.
As I escorted James downstairs I said that you and I had met a couple of times. He said he
thought you were a genuine individual; I agreed. James then said he would be prepared to
intervene again if I ever needed the help. I thanked him and said that was kind and I hoped we
had a strong enough relationship with Fujitsu that we could raise matters with Duncan and with
you; but that of course, it is always helpful to have other points of contact.
Our meeting was positive (very) and James was reassured that we are doing the right things. He
had been concerned that we might try to cut short the reviews. Instead he was ‘content’ and
‘delighted’ with what he heard. And praised my judgment. I thanked him and hoped we would
continue to have his support, even when matters became challenging as they are bound to do ina
project this complex.
The situation is difficult and the PO Board left me in no doubt that they thought so. My team is
taking good advice and we are planning carefully how we bring the independent review to
completion; it needs to progress at pace but not so quickly that we fail to close it down. We will
leave any prosecution challenges where they belong - with the courts; and are considering a
mediation approach for non-criminal unresolved cases. Once we have bottomed the final
approach, I will let you and Duncan know. Fujitsu colleagues continue to be responsive to PO;
although there was a reference by Second Sight that they had not always found that to be so. I
have asked for details. We will see what emerges.
On the positive side, this is already proving a catalyst to enable me to change some deeply
embedded culture issues and that is a good thing.
Simon, thank you very much. There is no doubt your intervention was helpful! I will be in touch
if or when anything changes. My CFO Chris Day is deputising whilst I am away and he is
meeting with Duncan next week.
