have. recently been contacted by my constituent, Mr Harjinder Singh Butoy of
H GRO regarding his conviction for theft from the
Post Office when he was a sub-postmaster.
Re: Mr Harjinder Singh Butoy,
Mr Butoy was the sub-postmaster at The Forest Side Sub Post Office in Sutton-In-
Ashfield from 2004 to 2007. Following an audit in 2007, Mr Butoy was arrested and
convicted of 10 counts of theft through false accounting totalling over £200k. Mr
Butoy has always denied the allegations and plead not guilty to all charges. He was
found guilty and sentenced to three and a half years in prison. This also resulted in
Mr Butoy being forced in to bankruptcy and having his reputation ruined.
Mr Butoy asserts that, like the many other sub-postmasters wrongly accused of theft,
it was errors caused by the Horizon transactions processing system that created the
financial discrepancies that led to his conviction.
Can you please update me on the current situation regarding sub-postmasters
wrongly accused of theft due to errors caused by the Horizon system and let me
know in what circumstances compensation can be paid to these people? I would also
be grateful if you could set up a discussion between the Post Office and Mr Butoy's
representatives to discuss his case.
