> Derrylin POLTD/1314/0110 (Police Liaison) — This office closed on 25/07/2013 and
moved to new office at a different location with a different branch code. It later came to
notice that a remittance for £21,837.20 of cheques remmed out of the system
23/07/2013 were never received. The debt later increased by £21,837 (doubled) due to
a TC for which was found to be the SPMR's HM Customs payment. Enniskillen PSNI
Detectives are at present constructing their investigative case with a mind to prosecute.
Awaiting further from said Detectives. Historically, Suzanne Winter attended the Police
PACE interview with the suspect offender, SPMR Rita O'REILLY, and her solicitor on 4"
June 2014; no admissions made.
> Drumantee POLTD/1415/0102 (Police Liaison) - Newry PSNI CID are progressing
this case and require more information from POL to understand the systems and how
they could have been abused to facilitate theft. The SPMR, Damian McGenity, has
attended Newry Police Station several times and has handed over numerous exhibits,
however what he can’t produce are the figures before they were supposedly amended
by PO clerk Pat Fagan (suspect). Mr McGenity thinks these details are possibly stored
somewhere within the Horizon system and if so this would clearly identify the false
accounting. I am now looking to see if there are any record of these amendments on
the ‘horizon’ system. Possible Horizon issues here!
> Mossley POLTD/1314/0146 (Police Liaison) - This case relates to allegations of theft
amounting to £10,000 due to a customer, Lisa COLEMAN, fraudulently obtaining
withdrawals from a Cash Plus MasterCard. Police have recently informed that a suspect
(Lisa COLEMAN) has been charged with 17 counts of fraud totaling £10,880.00. Lisa
Coleman was in court in January and intended to plead guilty however a new defence
solicitor has requested further information from MasterCard which has thrown a
spanner in the works. Since this request MasterCard have not been very forthcoming
with the information however I am hoping this will soon be resolved. The case is listed
POL00326019
POL00326019
for mention in court on 9" April 15.
> Bessbrook POLTD/1314/0122- (Being closed) - This case was heard at Newry
Magistrates Court (first appearance) on the 26th January 2015 when Norma Jean Walsh
pleaded guilty to 8 counts of theft and was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment,
suspended for one and a half years, for each count. There was no compensation
order sought as offenders financial circumstances would not have warranted same.
> Londonderry POLTD/1415/0030 - (Royal Mail Liaison) - Londonderry Crown Branch
Manager was working out of stock 4D on 19/05/2014 and declared £7.00 loss in the
cash. He only secured the top drawer in the insert safe and left the bottom drawer at
the counter position. The following day it was found that the bottom drawer was still at
the counter. A full check identified £1,000 short in the £20's. CCTV footage shows
Caroline McIvor, Romec cleaner spending longer time than usual at the counter position
where the loss occurred. 6th June 2014 RM Security conducted a PACE interview with
Ms MclIvor who admitted stealing cash from the drawer of SU 4D on the evening of 19th
May 2014. CCTV footage of cleaner standing for a period of time at the relevant counter
position. She stated she didn't know how much she had taken as she had not counted
the money. She was able to confirm that she had spent between £300 & £400 on her
recent holiday and the remainder of the money was still at home. Ms McIvor denied
theft of any other monies reported missing in the office over the last four years. During
a search of her purse £220 (11 x £20's) was found. She admitted that the money had
been part of the cash she had stolen. Ms McIvor claimed that she had intended to leave
it in an envelope in the office for the BM to find. During a search she produced the
remainder of the stolen cash £260 (13 x £20's). Ms Mclvor signed bank Disclosures. She
was suspended from duty on the authority of Mr KEENAN [ROMEC]. RM Security is
preparing a report for the Public Prosecution Service to consider charges. On 26th June
2014, Ms McIvor repaid the outstanding amount by cheque for £537.10. Awaiting PPS
decision to prosecute at this time.
> Ballynafeigh POLTD/1213/0193 - An audit was conducted at the office on 11th January
2013. The audit revealed a shortage of £45,555.22. A POL PACE interview was carried
out with no admissions made, however SPMR intimated that it may have been
something to do with Horizon. Committal file to MTB (Ernie Waterworth) Solicitor
20/02/2014. Re submitted to CLT 20/08/2014. Awaiting Horizon SME.
> Garvaghey POLTD/1415/0137 - (Police Liaison) - Audit Discrepancy. 12" March 2015
auditors discovered that a stock unit (OOH) showed a cash declaration of £10748.54,
however the monies were not present at the Post Office. The person in charge of the
office is the niece of the SPMR, who has another Post Office, and has not made any
admissions. The SPMR was suspended and has made good the loss. The PSNI are now
investigating this loss. I have since discovered that the suspect clerk may have learning
difficulties and may have taken the money whilst under the influence of her fiancé; this
information has been passed to the Police investigating officer.
