FT: SUBPOSTMASTERS WIN PERMISSION TO SUE POST OFFICE OVER COMPUTER SYSTEM

GUARDIAN: FRANK FIELD SUBMITS GIG ECONOMY EVIDENCE TO MATTHEW TAYLOR REVIEW

FT: SUBPOSTMASTERS WIN PERMISSION TO SUE POST OFFICE OVER COMPUTER SYSTEM

A group of sub-postmasters who were previously sacked or prosecuted for incorrect balances on tills at
Post Office branches have been granted permission by the High Court to pursue a collective action.

The former sub-postmasters have claimed that mistakes were due to glitches in the Horizon IT system they
were using and were not intentional attempts to steal cash from the company. The Justice for Sub-
postmasters Alliance have been given six months to add any further postmasters to their group litigation
and have released a press release with their legal representatives, Freeths.

Media handling:

Press office took a call from Michael Pooler at the FT this afternoon. In the first instance, all questions
should be directed to the Post Office press team. If pushed, the below lines can be used.

LTT:
“This is a matter for Post Office Ltd. Please call their press office.”
If pushed:

“As this legal case is open, it is not appropriate for us to comment.”

GUARDIAN: FRANK FIELD SUBMITS GIG ECONOMY EVIDENCE TO MATTHEW TAYLOR REVIEW
The Guardian is expected to run a story in the morning based on evidence Frank Field, chairman of the
work and pensions select committee, has submitted to the Matthew Taylor review on modern working
practices. The evidence goes into areas including gig working, the minimum wage and Employment
Agency Standards Inspectorate.

Media handling: The below line has been sent to the Guardian.

LTT:

A spokesperson for the Matthew Taylor Review said:

“As part of our country-wide evidence gathering tour we are considering whether employment practices
need to change to keep pace with modern business models — including the gig economy and use of
agency workers. It is also considering the implications of new forms of work on worker rights and
responsibilities - as well as on employer freedoms and obligations.”

Background:

We have received this submission and will consider the recommendations as part of the Review.
