Mr Thomas was postmaster at Gaerwen Post Office from 9 June 1994 to 13 October 2005,
when his contract for services was suspended. The ‘late account’ debt initially comprised a
final audit shortage of £48,444.27 and a Cheques To EDS transaction correction for £1,803.02.
Two letters requesting repayment of the late account debt went unanswered but then
notification was then received that Mr Thomas had pleaded guilty to all charges in relation to
the shortages at Gaerwen PO when he appeared in court in November 2006.
The case was then dealt with under the Proceeds of Crime Act and an initial payment of
£3,600.00 from Mr Thomas was returned by the bank annotated “payment stopped’.
In November 2007 a cheque for £5,996.68 was received via the Investigation Team but no
further repayments has been made since.
On 24 January 2008 a bankruptcy order was made against the former subpostmaster and
Post Office Limited has been added to the list of creditors. However, we have now received a
copy of the creditors report from the Official Receiver's Office which states that Mr Thomas
has no assets (although enquiries are continuing into the valuation of the bankrupt's motor
vehicle) but liabilities estimated at £99,37.00.
Mr Thomas isl ith no realistic means of employment and, therefore, the Official
Receiver have concluded that there appears to be no prospect of a distribution to creditors.
No further action can be taken in pursuit of this debt and write off would now seem
appropriate to clear the debt from POL’s accounts.
