Thank you for your letter of 25 February about the decision to prosecute your wife, Susan.

1am truly sorry to learn of your situation and read your letter with sadness. You will,
however, recognise that Post Office Ltd has to be mindful that the cash and stock we are
accountable for are public funds.

The decision to issue legal proceedings is never one that is taken lightly but to help me
better understand the circumstances, I have consulted with colleagues in both the
Contracts and National Security Teams. From my investigations it is clear that that the
alleged offences against Susan are, regrettably, of a sufficiently serious nature to support
that this the correct course of action to take.

I recognise that this is an extremely difficult time and know this is not the
answer you hoped for. It certainly gives me no pleasure to write a letter like
this but I do hope you understand why I cannot agree to meet your request.
