During my conversation with Paul X Williams regarding the prosecution case against Mrs Susan
Rudkin, he mentioned that you were looking into relaxing a restraining order currently in place which”
restricts Mr Rudkin from selling any property.
Can you advise if this is something that is currently being done, presumably to allow Mr Rudkin to pay
the debt much quicker than at the current rate of £1000 per month?
This is simply for my understanding and for Alan Cook's information, who will be responding to Mr
Rudkin. ~

reopening the case in line with the current situation.

confirm I am the Senior Lawyer dealing with the prosecution of Susan Jane Rudkin.
You asked for a backgroundto the case. The Post Office Network Auditors visited Ibstock Post Office
on Wednesday 20th August 2008 to conduct verification of assets audit. After being admitted to the
Post Office the wife of the Subpostmaster Mrs Susan Rudkin requested a private word with the Auditor
Paul Field. She then informed him that the safe would be around £40,000 short. After audit the
discrepancy in the account was £43,856.89 which was mainly due to a shortage in cash of
£43,761.17.
Asa result she was interviewed on tape under caution by the Post Office Limited Investigation
Officers, during the course of the interview she admitted that the Post Office had been experiencing
losses and she had been inflating the cash on hand to cover it up. She also said that she had been
taking cash from the Post Office and paying it into their Lloyds Bank Business Account to cover bills.
She said that she could not say exactly when the theft started and she also said that she had felt
embarrassed to tell her husband about the situation and felt that she had let him down. When asked
about the cash declaration she said that she kept a running total of the shortages’and just added this
amount on to the daily figures. She also acknowledged that she had stolen the money from the Post
Office and was not at present able to repay it
As a result she has been charged with theft of £43,894.15 over a period between the 1st January 2007
and 20th August 2008.
She is summoned to appear at Coalville Magistrates Court on the 13th March 2009.

unfortunately ! played no role in the audit, suspension and subsequent reinstalling of Michael Rudkin
as Postmaster of Ibstock. My role is predominantly sales and service management and disciplinary

Firstly, apologies for sending a group email. We have received the attached letter addressed to Alan
Cook who has indicated that he would like to respond personally.
Briefly, it appears that the husband has been reinstated following a suspension, and losses of
£44,000. It appears that the wife was actually responsible for the loss without any knowledge of Mr
Rudkin.
As you will see from the letter, Mrs Rudkin's first hearing before the magistrate is on Friday 13 March.
Mr Rudkin has detailed a very personal plea to Alan Cook for assistance in the matter.
Would it be possible to advise me of the background to this case and an update on the current
situation so that I may draft a response for Alan's signature.
